Top Local Winners of Art Contest Celebrate Hispanic HeritageDETROIT, 2006-10-12 - General Motors Corp. and Latino Art Beat today announced that five students from different cities won local “What Hispanic/Latino Heritage and Culture Mean to Me!” art contests and will go on to compete for the national grand prize of a $10,000 scholarship and a chance to have his/her artwork appear in GM’s Hispanic Heritage Month advertising.“ GM believes in the enormous potential of the Hispanic community ,” said Patricia I. Maldonado, GM manager, U.S. Hispanic Market, Multicultural Sales & Marketing. “ That is why we are committed to Hispanic youth and support Latino Art Beat, which encourages young Latino artists across the country to celebrate our Hispanic heritage.” Latino Art Beat is a nonprofit organization promoting Hispanic youth involvement in the arts through local scholarship competitions in Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, and Washington, D.C. Each local 1 st Place winner was awarded a $3,000 scholarship . The 1 st Place winners are: Chicago Zulma Gonzalez , Lakeview High School / Gallery 37 “Que Dios nos guarde Tiempo” -- oil on paper painting College of Choice : Undecided Houston Jose Ochoa Chavez High School “Mi Mundo Latino” – Pen Ink College of Choice: University of Texas Los Angeles Jon Rosario John Marshall High School “Family Values” – Water / Ink College of Choice : Undecided Miami Kandy Lopez (also 2006 National Winner) New World School of the Arts “Fierce” – Oil on Acrylic College of Choice : Undecided Washington , D.C. Jose Flores-White Bell High School "Jose Flores" -- Pencil College of Choice: Cooper Union College . Additionally, each participating city also selected 2nd and 3 rd Place winners who were awarded $1,500 and $500 each respectively. The national grand prize winner of the contest will officially be announced by GM Executives and City Officials during an award ceremony in Miami on Thursday, November 9, 2006. This is the fourth year GM has sponsored the Latino Art Beat competition. For more than two decades, GM has been a dedicated contributor to the education of Hispanic students. In 2005 alone, GM provided Latino students with scholarships worth more than $750,000.
